- New creatures have found in deep-sea volcanoes
A team of British scientists has captured images of very rare species, in some of the most inaccessible parts of the Indian Ocean. While they were surveying volcanic underwater vents, they found an array of creatures, including yeti crabs, scaly-foot snails and sea cucumbers.
- Mount Everest is more than two feet taller
The new official height is 8,848.86 meters (29,032 feet), slightly more than Nepal’s previous measurement and about four meters higher than China’s. The world’s highest mountain is now officially a little higher, and that might not be the end of the story.

- The world’s quietest room is located at Microsoft’s headquarters in Washington state.
A room in Building 87 of Microsoft’s headquarters, which is located in Redmond, Washington, USA, is the quietest place on Earth. The room, which is an anechoic chamber, was built by Microsoft engineers to test newly developed equipment.
- The longest place name on the planet is 85 letters long
The North Island of New Zealand has a place named
Taumatawhakatangihangakoauauotamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronukupokaiwhenuakitanatahu. The 1,000-foot hill near the township Porangahau holds the Guinness World Record for longest place name, with 85 characters.

Why it matters: Fin whale songs could be used to map the Earth’s crust when conventional — and in some cases, controversial — methods like firing seismic air guns from ships may not be available.
